Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka met when they were 23 and 17, respectively, at a convention in their hometown of Scarborough, Ontario. They were married only a year later, in 1988. The couple appeared to be completely typical, upper-class newlyweds; their wedding was a huge affair, complete with horse-drawn carriages, a $2000 wedding dress, and an estimated $50,000 paid back to the couple in gifts. Nobody suspected anything of the pair, but they were far from innocent.
Before he met Homolka, Bernardo had committed a series of sexual assaults throughout his hometown in Scarborough, Ontario. He was never taken into custody at the time, but he was in fact guilty of being "The Scarborough Rapist", as the media dubbed him.
After marrying Karla Homolka, the duo only escalated into worse crimes, including the rape and murder of Karla's sister, Tammy Homolka, before they were finally taken into custody in 1993, after Paul beat Karla severely enough for her to end up in the ER.
